February 16 - February 17

Freedom of Expression Workshop for College Student Leaders

February 16 - February 17 at The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics 2961 W County Road 225 S
Greencastle, IN 46135 United States

Most people agree that freedom of speech and expression are essential to learning, research, and scholarship. But there is significant disagreement about how to balance these freedoms against other values, especially on college campuses. On February 16-17 undergraduate student leaders from across Indiana will convene for a two-day workshop focused on freedom of expression on college campuses.

We will be joined by three exciting keynote speakers:

Jonathan Friedman, the director of free expression and education programs at PEN America, a non-profit organization that stands at the intersection of literature and human rights to protect free expression in the United States and worldwide.

Jess Miner, the executive director of the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard who has led the Intercollegiate Civil Disagreement Partnership, which trains students across the country about how to have genuine and productive discussions about topics where there is deep disagreement.

Leah Johnson, author of young adult fiction and the founder and owner of Loudmouth Books in Indianapolis, an independent bookstore dedicated to highlighting banned books and uplifting the work of marginalized authors.

In addition to the keynote addresses, the workshop will involve interactive and team-based work,  as well as practical activities and discussion led by DePauw faculty and staff.

This workshop is supported through a generous grant from the Lilly Foundation.
