Ethics Scholarships

Your interest in ethics could win you a scholarship at DePauw University! If you want to include ethics in your college experience, and you choose to enroll at DePauw University, you are eligible for our ethics scholarship package. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong aptitude for thinking about ethics and the critical issues of our time.

Ethics Scholarship Application Information

To be considered for this scholarship, apply to DePauw before February 1st and highlight your interest in ethics in your admissions materials. Scholarships are offered on a rolling basis, so interested candidates should apply as soon as possible. Ethics Scholarships Guidelines

Prindle Institute Ethics Scholarships are renewable each year for four years contingent upon meeting the following criteria (these are the criteria for students entering DePauw in Fall 2024 and later):

  1. Maintain a minimum of 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
  2. Meet with the Prindle Institute Director once each semester to discuss your ethics-related activities and to review your progress in meeting the requirements for renewal of your scholarship.
  3. Participate in the Prindle Institute First-Year Internship in your first year at DePauw
  4. Participate in the Prindle Institute Hillman Internship Program or make progress towards completing the DePauw Ethics in Society minor.

 

Scholarship holders who entered DePauw before Fall 2024 can maintain their eligibility by meeting the criteria above, or the previous  criteria which are listed below:

  1. Maintain a minimum of 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
  2. Meet with the Prindle Institute Director once each semester to discuss your ethics-related activities and to review your progress in meeting the requirements for renewal of your scholarship.
  3. Complete two of the following each academic year:
  • Attend six Prindle Institute-sponsored events
  • Take an ethics course
    • Take one ethics-related course or two Prindle quarter-credit ethics reading courses. Here is a listing of recent courses at DePauw with significant ethics components. Please consult with the Prindle Institute’s Director Jeff Dunn (jeffreydunn@depauw.edu) about which courses in any given semester are suitable options.
  • Work at the Prindle Institute
  • Participate in Ethics Bowl programming
    • Compete on DePauw’s Ethics Bowl Team or on DePauw’s Bioethics Bowl team.
    • Volunteer to help coach a local high school’s Ethics Bowl team.
  • Conduct ethics-related research
    • Work with a faculty member on a research project with a significant ethics component. Independent studies with ethics components also qualify.
  • Present at an academic conference or publish your work
    • Have an ethics-related paper accepted for presentation at a conference (such as the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics annual conference) or accepted for publication in a journal. The Prindle Institute will cover your travel to the conference if accepted. Here is a list of possible conferences and journals to consider.
  • There are a variety of options not listed above that could count towards fulfilling the requirements of the ethics scholarship. Recipients are welcome to email the Prindle Institute’s Director Jeff Dunn (jeffreydunn@depauw.edu) to develop a customized plan.
