Stuff of Thought wordmark

The Exhibition

Key exhibition artwork by Li Montalvo

“Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out alive.”
Elbert Hubbard

Stuff of Thought presents a new body of work exploring “sacred pause,” a concept rooted in Buddhist philosophy describing the moment between thoughts where awareness becomes possible.

Sacred pause is the brief interval between stimulus and response, the space in which we can notice our reactions before they unfold automatically. It is a chance to be present with our thoughts and to examine, rather than simply enact, our interpretations of a situation. This work extends an earlier inquiry into schemas, the way past experience and cultural conditioning shape our responses before we are even aware of choosing them. Sacred pause interrupts that pattern, opening a small but significant gap between habit and choice.

Through geometric abstraction, a restrained palette, and hard-edge lines, each painting builds a space for reflection: a moment of stillness, a chance to breathe. These works do not tell a story or depict a subject. They ask for presence instead, a direct encounter with the quiet geometry of awareness itself, the stillness that exists between automatic response and conscious choice.

Visitors are invited to slow down in front of each piece and notice their own mental habits as they look, an experience the paintings are built to support rather than illustrate.

The Artist

Li Montalvo (they/them) is a Puerto Rican artist based in Indianapolis, IN. Graduated from Naropa University with studies in Visual Arts and Contemplative Psychology, and graduate studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Their paintings delve into the landscape of the psyche, interested in how attention, emotion, and inner experience shape the way we see and relate to the world, the place of possibilities where reality is constructed. They believe it is only through mindfulness that we can create a gap for mindful action to occur.
