Ethics Scholarships

Put ethics at the center of your DePauw experience.

At DePauw, curiosity doesn’t stop at the classroom door—it’s part of everyday life. With our ethics scholarships, you’ll join a vibrant community of thinkers and doers who believe that asking big questions is the first step toward making a difference. Whether you’re drawn to debates about justice and fairness, the responsibilities of leadership, or what it means to live a good life, you’ll find your place here. As a scholarship recipient, you’ll have opportunities to engage deeply with the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics—through internships, campus events, research projects, and community conversations that bring ethical reflection to life. From your first semester, you’ll explore the connections between ideas and action, meet others who share your curiosity, and develop the skills to think critically and lead thoughtfully. Studying ethics at DePauw means joining a university-wide community committed to understanding the world—and shaping it for the better.

The Application Process

DePauw’s 1,900 curious, compassionate students lead by example and seek connection across differences. They come from nearly every state and dozens of countries to explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and make an impact that reaches beyond campus. Admission to DePauw is selective, and the university is committed to building talented and diverse classes through a holistic, student-centered admission process. We look for students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and a desire to learn from and with others in a collaborative residential environment.

To be considered for an Ethics Scholarship, apply to DePauw University by February 1 of your senior year. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis, so earlier applications receive priority consideration. Be sure to highlight your interest in ethics and the critical issues of our time in your application materials.

If DePauw feels like the right fit for you, start by requesting more information about our admission process, scholarship opportunities, and visit options—or connect with an admissions counselor and apply Early Decision if DePauw is your top choice.

Scholarship and Renewal Requirements

Prindle Institute Ethics Scholarships are renewable for up to four years, provided recipients continue to meet the following criteria. These requirements apply to students entering DePauw in Fall 2024 and later:

  • Maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.

  • Meet with the Prindle Institute Director once each semester to discuss your ethics-related activities and review your progress toward renewal.

  • Participate in the Prindle Institute First-Year Internship during your first year at DePauw.

  • Participate in the Prindle Institute Hillman Internship Program or make progress toward completing the Ethics in Society minor.

Students who began at DePauw prior to Fall 2024 may maintain their eligibility by meeting the updated criteria above, or by fulfilling the previous renewal requirements. To remain eligible, students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, meet with the Prindle Institute Director once each semester to discuss their ethics-related activities and review progress toward renewal, and complete two of the following activities each academic year:

Attend six Institute-sponsored events.
The Institute hosts speakers and panels throughout the year. Check in with a staff member and stay for the full event to receive credit.

Take an ethics course.
Complete one course with a significant ethics component or two Prindle quarter-credit Ethics Reading Courses. A listing of recent courses is available online. Consult with Director Jeffrey Dunn (jeffreydunn@depauw.edu) about suitable options each semester.

Work at the Prindle Institute.
Apply to become a Prindle Institute intern. (Please note: receiving the scholarship does not guarantee employment; all interns must complete the regular application process.)

Participate in Ethics Bowl.
Compete on DePauw’s Ethics Bowl or Bioethics Bowl teams, or volunteer to help coach a local high school team.

Conduct research in ethics.
Work with a faculty member on a research project or independent study that includes a significant ethics component.

Present or publish your work.
Submit an ethics-related paper for presentation at a conference—such as the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Annual Meeting—or for publication in a journal. The Institute will cover travel costs for accepted conference presentations.
