Remembering David Smith

The Prindle Institute is saddened to announce the passing of David H. Smith, a pivotal figure in our Institute’s founding and development. Professor Smith passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at the age of 85.

David Smith’s contributions to the Prindle Institute were both foundational and enduring. In 2003, following his retirement from Indiana University, Professor Smith embarked on a new chapter of his illustrious career at DePauw University. Here, he served as the Frederick Distinguished Visiting Professor and played a crucial role in establishing the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics.

His expertise in religious studies and bioethics, honed over decades of academic work, provided a strong intellectual foundation for the institute. Smith’s vision for ethical education and his commitment to fostering critical thinking on moral issues were instrumental in shaping the Prindle Institute’s mission and approach.

Throughout his career, David Smith demonstrated an unwavering dedication to ethics education and institutional development. His work at the Prindle Institute was a continuation of his lifelong commitment to building bridges between academia and practical ethics, a legacy that continues to inspire our work today.

The Prindle Institute team extends our heartfelt condolences to David’s family, friends, and colleagues who were touched by his warmth, wisdom, and enthusiasm for life and learning. We are profoundly grateful for his contributions and will honor his memory by continuing the important work he helped to establish.
