Who is this for?
No philosophical background? No problem.
We welcome any educator interested in bringing ethical questions and skills into their classroom, whether through curriculum, discussion, or the way you approach tough topics. If you want your students to engage more deeply with the ethical dimensions of ideas, even when those ideas spark disagreement, this retreat is for you. Each summer we bring a small cohort of high school teachers from across the country to our campus in the DePauw Nature Park for three days of collaborative, immersive learning.
What will I do?
Three days of workshops, work time, and rest.
- →Workshops from Prindle Institute staff and DePauw University faculty on case-based pedagogy, ethical reasoning, and dialogue across difference
- →Hands-on exploration of the Institute’s ethics education resources
- →Dedicated work time on a classroom-ready lesson or discussion guide
- →Small-group sharing and peer feedback
- →Time for solo reflection, nature walks, and evenings around the campfire
- →Access to the trails and natural spaces of the 500-acre DePauw Nature Park
The retreat covers the basics of ethical reasoning and models for case-based ethics education, giving you practical frameworks you can bring back to your classroom. You’ll explore strategies for navigating disagreement and value tensions, develop skills for facilitating tough conversations, and pick up tools for infusing class discussions with philosophical inquiry. By the end, you’ll leave with a personal toolkit built for the realities of your teaching, and a community of educators who care as much as you do.

Accommodation is provided from the evening of June 2 through June 5, and all meals during the retreat are included. Participants cover their own travel to and from Greencastle. Applications are accepted through May 1, with acceptance notifications sent in early May.
