The Hillman Internship

Our premiere student program.

Hillman Interns engage in meaningful work, have thoughtful discussions about the ethics issues they are the most passionate about, and develop lasting relationships with each other and with members of the Prindle Institute staff. Past Hillman Interns have gone on to become professors, doctors, U.S. Senate staffers, and policy experts. Please contact Haley Thompson with any questions about the internship or the application process.

Program Information

Applications for the coming academic year are now open. Before you consider applying, please carefully read the following information. The Hillman Internship commitment typically consists of 4-5 hours per week during the academic year. All interns are expected to:

  • Attend and help out at Prindle Institute events
  • Work in a small interest group to develop programming for our on-campus programming or our community ethics education initiatives
  • Enroll in the .25 credit “Ethics in Action” course in the fall

Some examples of our On-Campus Programming Include:

  • Leading a panel discussion on a relevant ethical issue. Previous panel discussions have been on the ethics of environmental interventions, the ethics of voting, and the ethics of space exploration.
  • Hosting Unapologetics, a weekly radio show that explores a wide variety of ethical topics, including medical ethics, social media and civic discourse, public art, and more.
  • Organize “Campus Conscience” tabling events where Hillman Interns survey DePauw students on topics like, “Are in-person exams fair?”

Some examples of our Community Programming Include:

  • Engage with elementary school students in the “After School Ethics Program” to foster the development of ethical reasoning skills through games, roleplay, and interactive activities.
  • Facilitate an ethical discussion, using a case study, with residents of the Asbury Towers community.
  • Working directly with middle or high school students to help prepare them for ethics bowl competitions.

If you’re ready to apply for this internship, please be prepared to fill out the application below. Applications are due on April 14, 2025.
