Rules and Format

NHSEB Divisional Playoff matches are single-elimination competitions conducted online via Zoom video conference, using cases from the 2025–2026 Regional Case Set. Each match features two teams, three judges, and a moderator, and follows the standard National High School Ethics Bowl format: structured presentations, commentary, responses, and a judges’ question-and-answer period. Winners are determined by a majority of judges’ votes and advance to the National Championship.

Teams may gather in the same physical location and may either join from individual devices or participate together using a single laptop or classroom streaming system. In all cases, teams must be clearly visible and audible to the moderator, judges, and opposing team, and able to see and hear all other participants. Coaches and observers may not communicate with students during matches, and all student conferral must occur only during designated periods. Aside from limited adaptations for online competition, Divisional Playoff matches follow the same rules and scoring standards as the NHSEB National Championship, as outlined by the National High School Ethics Bowl and administered in partnership with the Parr Center for Ethics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Divisional Playoff matches conducted?

Divisional Playoff matches are single-elimination competitions held online via Zoom video conference. Teams may either have students join individually from their own devices or gather together using a single laptop or classroom streaming system. The key requirement is that all participants can clearly see and hear the moderator, judges, and opposing team—and can be clearly seen and heard in return.

Which cases are used for Divisional Playoffs?

All matches use cases from the 2025–2026 Regional Case Set. Teams will not know in advance which case or question will be assigned in a given match.

What does a Divisional Playoff match look like?

Each match includes two teams, three judges, and a moderator. Matches follow the standard National High School Ethics Bowl format: a team presentation, opposing commentary, a response, and a judges’ question-and-answer period. The team that receives a majority of judges’ votes advances.

How does team composition work for schools with multiple Regional teams?

Divisional Playoffs are school-based, not team-based. If a school qualified for the Divisional Playoffs with multiple teams at its Regional Competition, any eligible student from that school who competed at the qualifying Regional may be included on the Divisional Playoff roster. These students may be combined into a single Divisional Playoff team of up to five seated members.

What materials are students allowed to use?

Students may use blank scratch paper and pre-printed copies of the case packet. Pre-written notes, outside reference materials, and real-time assistance are not permitted during matches. Moderators will verify that any materials in use are blank for the sake of fairness.

Can coaches communicate with students during a match?

No. Coaches and observers may not communicate with students in any form during matches. All student collaboration must occur only during designated conferral periods, in accordance with National High School Ethics Bowl rules.

What happens if there are technical difficulties?

Moderators may pause a match to address connectivity or technical issues. If disruptions significantly affect the integrity of the match, the moderator—working with the Divisional Organizer—may suspend or reschedule the match following established NHSEB procedures.

Are the rules different from my Regional Competition?

Aside from limited adaptations for online competition, Divisional Playoff matches follow the same rules, scoring standards, and expectations as the NHSEB National Championship, as detailed in the 2025-2026 Rules Manual.

Can a Divisional Playoff match end in a tie?

Because Divisional Playoffs are elimination matches, judges are instructed to award their votes to the team that performed best overall. In the rare event of an unbreakable tie, Divisional Organizers will apply NHSEB procedures to determine which team advances.
