Something Wicked This Way Comes

Just in time for Halloween, the Prindle Institute has brewed up a cauldron of spooky classroom resources sure to send a shiver down your syllabus. From haunted houses to haunted minds, these materials invite readers of all ages to explore the ethics of all things strange and spooky—and to ask why we’re so drawn to what scares us.

Our brand new curated collection and teaching guide from The Prindle Post, “Fear, Death, and the Unknown,” gathers three chilling essays that explore why we’re drawn to what scares us. Evan Butts investigates the bone-rattling limits of consent in extreme horror attractions, Rachel Robison-Greene guides readers through the shadowy ethics of “dark tourism,” and Daniel Story ponders the haunting promise of cryonic revival. Each piece comes with suggested classroom activities and integration strategies aligned with ELA and social studies performance standards—making it easy for educators to spark ethical inquiry while meeting core objectives. Together, these materials probe the ethics behind our fascination with fright—and what that says about being human.

For younger philosophers, Scary Good Stories offers a newly curated collection of Teaching Children Philosophy discussion guides inspired by classic and contemporary tales—from The Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything to Jon Klassen’s The Skull and Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree. Alongside beloved picture books, this collection introduces new guides for spooky middle-grades reads that invite students to wrestle with deeper questions about fear, imagination, and moral courage. Each guide helps teachers lead lively classroom conversations that explore what it means to face the dark, together.

Whether you’re haunting the classroom or conjuring a late-October lesson, these collections promise ethical chills and thrills for learners of all ages!
