Ethics Reading Courses

Dive into ethics, one book at a time.

In Ethics Reading Courses, you’ll read and discuss with students a single work to enhance their understanding of the field of ethics or an individual ethical issue. These quarter-credit ethics reading courses allow students to easily weave an ethics component throughout their curriculum while at DePauw, and allow faculty members to pilot modules that fit into new or existing courses.

Course Information

Each quarter-credit Prindle Institute Reading Course invites students into a focused reading and discussion group built around a single text. Designed to balance rigor with flexibility, these courses include manageable assignments that encourage serious engagement while fitting easily into a busy schedule. Each course meets once a week for 90 minutes over the first eight weeks of the semester, from 7:00–8:30 p.m., either on campus or at the Prindle Institute. Enrollment is capped at ten students to ensure meaningful conversation, and courses with fewer than four students enrolled by the start of the term will be canceled. Information about existing Prindle Ethics Reading Courses is available here.

Instructor Compensation

Faculty who develop and teach a Prindle Institute Reading Course receive $700 for course development (completed during Winter or Summer) and a $1,000 course overload stipend during the semester the course is taught. The $700 development stipend applies only to new reading courses that have not been previously offered by the instructor. If a course is canceled for under-enrollment, faculty will receive only the development portion of the compensation.
